Frontrunners want ever more detailed information about materials, and environmental data is becoming increasingly important, but its weighting still varies significantly across markets, builders, and project categories. So what are clients asking for today \u2013 and what should the industry be ready for tomorrow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What clients are asking for now<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbon footprint tops the list: clients most often ask for life cycle assessments (LCAs) and environmental product declarations (EPDs). The data must be reliable, transparent and comparable, and ideally verified by a third party. Clients are also looking more closely at what the data actually covers. A declaration limited to the manufacturing stage, or an outdated design-phase EPD, is no longer sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increasingly, consideration is also given to the materials&#8217; potential for reuse and recycling, as well as their documented contribution to a circular economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of statutory requirements, some developers set their own carbon footprint cap per square metre, stricter than the legal limit, or pursue environmental certification such as LEED, BREEAM or the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Renovation and infrastructure are moving more slowly, and some projects still do not ask for an EPD at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regulation is tightening \u2013 and fragmenting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EU\u2019s revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requires member states to introduce carbon footprint limit values for new buildings by 2030 at the latest. Finland, Sweden and Norway are heading in the same direction, but at different speeds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Finland:<\/strong> Limit values are already in force. They apply to new buildings whose permit application was submitted on or after 9 January 2026, and they will be tightened in 2029. A few large cities have also set their own, stricter limits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sweden:<\/strong> Since 2022, new buildings have required a climate declaration covering construction-stage emissions, but no limit values apply yet. Under current proposals, whole-life-cycle emissions would have to be calculated for new buildings over 1,000 m\u00b2 from 2028 and for all new buildings from 2030, when limit values would also take effect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Norway:<\/strong> Since 2022, material emissions have had to be calculated for apartment blocks and commercial buildings, but no limit values apply yet. Limits have been proposed, but no date has been set for them to take effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legislation is only one part of the picture. Requirements come from many other directions, making the landscape highly fragmented. The Netherlands and France add their own national requirements on top of the standard EPD, and in infrastructure projects, for example, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) require their own product approvals. Each client is free to choose its own framework and interpret it as it sees fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything depends heavily on the country and the location. As a materials supplier, we respond to the needs of each project individually,\u201d says Tiina Partanen, Sustainability Director at Foamit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clients want more than environmental declarations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frontrunners also want to know about material composition, health effects and the supplier\u2019s sustainability performance as a company. The latter is often measured with the international EcoVadis rating. In Sweden, systems such as Basta and Byggvarubed\u00f6mningen (BVB) assess the chemical content and environmental properties of construction products. Foamit Sweden (formerly Hasopor) has achieved full marks in Basta\u2019s Health and Environmental Hazards category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What should the construction industry prepare for?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Requirements are expanding beyond a product\u2019s carbon footprint to cover the entire supply chain and the end of a building\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Supply chain transparency:<\/strong> companies must be able to show where materials come from, the conditions in which they are made and how far they travel \u2013 not only for direct suppliers but for second- and third-tier suppliers too.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data quality:<\/strong> environmental data must be verified, up to date and cover the full life cycle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Product Passport (DPP):<\/strong> rather than standing alone, the EPD will become part of a product\u2019s technical data, all in one place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Demolition and material efficiency:<\/strong> materials from demolished buildings must be kept in circulation through reuse and recycling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Foamit is responding<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foamit meets these requirements project by project and country by country. Comprehensive EPDs are available for its products, and in Finland the company holds an EcoVadis sustainability rating. Foam glass is a fully circular product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope regulation will start to reward products that genuinely support the circular economy,\u201d says Tiina Partanen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message for clients and designers is clear: look beyond the carbon footprint.
