The foundations for Firdonkatu are laid in thick clay soil, so a lightening structure was required to combat subsidence. Foamit foam glass aggregate was the perfect fit for this structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firdonkatu is part of Pasila\u2019s new central area, which will feature a development including a shopping centre, a new railway station, office buildings and apartment buildings. The entire project will cost more than EUR&nbsp;1&nbsp;billion, and it will be completed in the early 2020s. The Helsinki City Planning Committee approved the construction of Firdonkatu, which travels over the old railway sidings, in August 2014. As the soil in the area is highly demanding in geotechnical terms, the design process called for the very best specialists with demonstrated expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/foamit.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/foamit-keventaa-pasila-firdonkatu-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1179\" data-link=\"https:\/\/foamit.fi\/?attachment_id=1179\" class=\"wp-image-1179\" \/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/foamit.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/foamit-vaahtolasi-pasilan-tripla-siirtymarakenne-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1188\" data-link=\"https:\/\/foamit.fi\/?attachment_id=1188\" class=\"wp-image-1188\" \/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/foamit.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/foamit-vaahtolasi-pasilan-tripla-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1189\" data-link=\"https:\/\/foamit.fi\/?attachment_id=1189\" class=\"wp-image-1189\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transitional structure using Foamit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ramboll\nFinland Ltd has been involved in the geotechnical design of Tripla from the\nstart, ever since one million cubic metres of earth was excavated in Central\nPasila. According to Petri Tyynel\u00e4, who was responsible for the geotechnical\ndesign of Tripla and the new street, the process has been highly demanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geotechnical\nprofessionals have since been involved in every stage of Tripla\u2019s development;\nmost recently with the design of Firdonkatu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis\nis a transitional structure that will carry a stretch of street with foundations\nresting on pile slabs. Without the lightening effect of Foamit, the faulting in\nthe street structure would have been approximately 100&nbsp;millimetres, which\nis naturally far too much. By lightening the weight of the structure using foam\nglass aggregate, the transitional structure can be made safe for traffic and\ntechnically functional,\u201d says Ramboll Finland Ltd\u2019s Petri Tyynel\u00e4, who was\nresponsible for the geotechnical design of Tripla and the new street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tyynel\u00e4\nsays that foam glass aggregate was a clear choice for him when he was designing\nthe structure of Firdonkatu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis\nmaterial has many benefits, both in terms of geotechnical functionality and\nworksite installation. The material is easy to compact, and it can effectively\nwithstand people and vehicles travelling over it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From\nthe perspective of YIT, the contractor for Firdonkatu and the Tripla project as\na whole, the construction of Firdonkatu has been highly demanding due to the\nlocation and the construction conditions. Firdonkatu is the route for the\nmajority of the worksite\u2019s logistics. When Firdonkatu is complete, it will be\nthe entrance to Tripla for non-motorised traffic, as well as the second\nentrance to the Tripla car park for motor vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe\nfoam glass has been easy to use on-site. In addition, the large batch sizes\nhave been ideal for the worksite, bearing in mind how busy the roads are here,\u201d\nsays Aapo Urjanheimo, Project Manager from YIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firdonkatu\nwill be completed in autumn 2019 at the same time as the shopping centre.
